Maternity Care & Ultrasound

The Maternity team provides a supportive, nurturing and informative environment for expectant parents and their baby before, during, and after the birth. We believe in freedom of choice by meeting individual’s needs and involving them in all aspects of decision making regarding their pregnancy and labour.

Expectant mothers are admitted under the care of their Consultant Obstetrician and care in our unit is provided by registered midwives.

There is semi-private and private accommodation with en-suite facilities.

The Maternity department consists of:

	A 19-bed Unit
	Delivery Unit consisting of two delivery suites and two First Stage rooms
	Special Care Unit
	General Nursery
	The Special Care Baby Unit - also known as the Neonatal Unit
	It has 6 cots, which are split into three areas of Intensive Care, High Dependency and Special Care
	Each area is equipped and heated differently in accordance with the medical needs of its babies
	The Unit cares only for babies with medical problems.

Services available include:

	Ante natal care and ante natal classes
	Labour and Delivery
	24 hour epidural service
	Caesarean sections if required are carried out in the main theatre
	Post natal care
	Nursery facilities
	Special care baby unit with 24 hour paediatric cover
	Education and advice on the care of baby
	Breast feeding support and advice provided by midwives.

Every patient attending the hospital has their own consultant who provides all of their anti-natal care. The physiotherapy department provides individual treatment to all mothers who have undergone a caesarean section.

Nutrition and Dietetics

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics currently has two dietitians. Ann Jenkins, Senior Dietitian and Adrienne O’Reilly

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Mount Carmel Hospital is staffed by 2 senior dietitians, both members of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI). The INDI is the professional organisation for Dietitians/Clinical Nutritionists in Ireland.

The Department offers a range of clinical services including nutritional assessment, advice on dietary modification and nutritional support. This service is provided to in-patients and out-patients.

• Consultant and General Practitioner referrals are welcomed.

Patients may self-refer providing they have had a recent medical review.

The Dietitians see patients with a range of Health related issues:-

Individualised dietary plans are designed to achieve weight gain, weight reduction or a nourishing diet suitable for the illness/condition.

New Service for Bone Health
Patients at risk of osteoporosis may have a Dexa Scan and education sessions with the Dietitian and Physiotherapist to maximise bone health.

Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedic ward is a forty-bedded unit located on the ground floor of Mount Carmel close to the Physiotherapy Department. It provides a wide range of services in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery specialising  particularly in hip and knee replacements. The unit is staffed by nurses with many years experience in orthopaedics.

The orthopaedic team is committed to delivering the highest quality of care at all stages of investigation and treatment and prides itself in being able to offer:

• Pre-assessment prior to surgery thereby ensuring orthopaedic patients  are fit for surgery whilst avoiding cancellation and disappointment on the day of surgery
• Patient education
• Evidence based treatment

Orthopaedic Pre-Assessment Clinic
All patients scheduled for joint surgery in Mount Carmel Hospital (MCH) must attend the Pre-Assessment Clinic in MCH following referral by their consultant. 
At the Pre-assessment Clinic, a comprehensive medical assessment takes place to ensure patients are fit for surgery thereby minimising risk, ensuring a speedy recovery whilst avoiding cancellation and disappointment on day of surgery. This visit usually takes place two to three weeks before admission to MCH.

What are the benefits of attending?
Along with establishing medical fitness, the patient is more psychologically prepared for surgery as he/she is informed of the process of events from admission to discharge whilst any concerns regarding the pending surgery are addressed during the pre-assessment stage. Patients become familiar with MCH hospital, have the opportunity to meet some of the staff and are invited to ask questions. Advice is also given regarding post-surgery pain relief.

During the visit
The following will take place:

• Blood tests
• An ECG (tracing of the heart)
• MRSA screening
• Review by a physician as required
• A physical & medical history taken by the Pre-Assessment Nurse
• An assessment by a physiotherapist
• A Chest X-ray – if required.

Length of visit
2-3 hours if a physician review is required.
1.5 hours – if a physician review is not required.

Pastoral Care

The Pastoral Care Department provides spiritual, emotional and psychological support to patients and their families. The Pastoral Care Team consists both of lay people, and chaplains of all demoninations who have a wide variety of experience in the healthcare setting. As members of the multi-disciplinary team, they are involved in the holistic care of patients by meeting their spiritual and emotional needs during their stay in hospital.

Phlebotomy

The Phlebotomy Department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients and operates a walk-in service, with no appointment necessary, to facilitate outpatients to have their blood samples taken. Alternatively, samples may be taken in your GP surgery and brought to the phlebotomy department. We have a highly trained team of phlebotomists who provide a safe, efficient and friendly service for both inpatients and outpatients. Outpatients can present themselves to the Phlebotomy Department with a request form or letter from their consultant or General Practitioner (GP).

We provide a wide range of blood tests, the most common being: Full Blood Count, Lipid Profile (Cholesterol), Prostatic Specific Antigen (PSA), Blood Glucose Level, Glucose Tolerance Test (for diabetes), and Coagulation tests (to check the clotting ability of blood e.g. patients taking warfarin). Most routine blood test results are available on the same day of the blood test and outpatient results are posted daily to the referring Consultant/GP.

Preparation for blood tests varies, but in most cases only minimal preparation is necessary. Your doctor will advise you in advance if any preparations are required, for example, fasting for a blood cholesterol level.

In addition to providing a phlebotomy service, a range of diagnostic non-invasive procedures is available to both inpatients and outpatients at very competitive prices and include:
■ Electrograph (ECG)
■ 24-Hour Holter Monitor

■ Exercise Stress Testing (appointment organised through Phlebotomy Department)

The Physiotherapy Department provides both In-Patient and Out-Patient Services.

We have a team of Chartered Physiotherapists with specialist training in Musculoskeletal, Women's Health, Pre and Post-Natal Care and Phototherapy (UVB + A). We provide a comprehensive rehabilitation programme for all Orthopaedic Patients.

X-Ray Radiology

The Mount Carmel Hospital Radiology Department

 

X-ray department is run by appointment only, which means that waiting times are kept to a minimum. We understand that many patients are anxious about their examination and we strive to ensure that each patient is treated with respect, care and compassion. The team comprises five Radiologists; seven Radiographers; and two Ultrasound Sonographers.

We offer a range of tests and examinations including:

	Multislice CT (thorax including high resolution and pulmonary scanning, abdomen, pelvis, sinuses, vascular and bone)
	Fluroscopy (including Barium, IVP)
	Mammography / Breast Ultrasound, biopsies and cyst aspiration
	Ultrasound General and Obstetric (Obstetric and 4 D, general abdominal, pelvic including transvaginal, Carotid Doppler, Venous Doppler, small parts)

	Dexascan (bone densitometry)
