In response to the 2009 H1N1 Pandemic Flu (also known as Swine Flu), Mount Carmel Hospital formed a multidisciplinary Pandemic Taskforce to assess and manage the impact of the flu on patients, staff and visitors to the hospital. The Taskforce clearly defined roles and responsibilities for each member of the team. We expect the only patients likely to be admitted as inpatients with this flu will be pregnant women who are registered with Mount Carmel for their Maternity Care. Since the availability of the vaccine and in line with HSE guidelines, consultant obstetricians nationally actively recommend that pregnant women are vaccinated. This policy is being followed by Mount Carmel Hospital consultant obstetricians and an increasing number of our maternity patients have been vaccinated. The staff vaccination programme prioritised staff who are in contact with pregnant women and babies. Nationally, the highest rate of infection with the H1N1 virus is among children under 14. For this reason and in keeping with Department of Health & Children guidelines, we recommend that children under 14 do not visit the hospital.
